Termites and fire : current understanding and future research directions for improved savanna conservation

چکیده
Termites are considered to be major ecosystem engineers in tropical environments. However, they are often neglected and under studied, especially in grassy systems. The interaction between termites and fire ecology is one example of this. Given the importance of both fires and termites in savanna systems, it is critical for an improved ecological understanding of savanna biodiversity that the interaction between them is better understood. In this paper, we highlight the lack of published literature on fire ecology and invertebrates in austral systems, with particular focus on termites. We review the six studies conducted in savannas spanning the southern hemisphere which investigate this interaction, summarizing their findings and limitations. We suggest areas

The Effect of Carbon Credits on Savanna Land Management and Priorities for Biodiversity Conservation
Carbon finance offers the potential to change land management and conservation planning priorities. We develop a novel approach to planning for improved land management to conserve biodiversity while utilizing potential revenue from carbon biosequestration. We apply our approach in northern Australia's tropical savanna, a region of global significance for biodiversity and carbon storage, both o...
متن کاملManaging the matrix: decadal responses of eucalypt-dominated savanna to ambient fire regimes.
Much of our understanding of the response of savanna systems to fire disturbance relies on observations derived from manipulative fire plot studies. Equivocal findings from both recent Australian and African savanna fire plot assessments have significant implications for informing conservation management and reliable estimation of biomass stocks and dynamics. Influential northern Australian rep...
متن کاملForests, savannas, and grasslands: bridging the knowledge gap between ecology and Dynamic Global Vegetation Models
The forest, savanna, and grassland biomes, and the transitions between them, are expected to undergo major changes in the future due to global climate change. Dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) are very useful for understanding vegetation dynamics under the present climate, and for predicting its changes under future conditions. However, several DGVMs display high uncertainty in predictin...
متن کاملFungus-Growing Termites Originated in African Rain Forest
Fungus-growing termites (subfamily Macrotermitinae, Isoptera) cultivate fungal crops (genus Termitomyces, Basidiomycotina) in gardens inside their colonies. Those fungus gardens are continuously provided with plant substrates, whereas older parts that have been well decomposed by the fungus are consumed (cf.). Fungus-growing termites are found throughout the Old World tropics, in rain forests a...
